HISTORY OF THE WWE DRAFT & BRAND EXTENSION

With Vince McMahon wanting to shake things up again and split the WWE Roster to 2 brands, Raw & Smackdown, with Stephanie McMahon controlling Raw & Shane McMahon controlling Smackdown, I thought I would do a blog looking at the history of the Draft & Brand Split. I will talk about each year they did the draft and who was drafted to what brand. I will not talk about what happened after the draft, and if people were traded or if they lost a title. This is strictly about the actual draft. Then, I will list everyone’s draft history, & at the end I will list how many people were drafted in total and what wrestlers were drafted the most in the 9 years that the WWE had the draft, as well as other facts.

I hope you enjoy this and for all feedback, leave comments below or tweet me (@Hbkid718). Thanks.

2002

In 2002, with the purchase of WCW & ECW in 2001, there was an abundance of talent in WWF. So they decided to split the roster into 2 separate brands, Raw & Smackdown. Ric Flair was in charge of Raw, while Vince McMahon was in charge of Smackdown. On March 25, 2002 on Raw, the 1st ever WWF Draft was held. Picks #1 -20 were held on Raw, while #21-57 were held on WWF.com, via a random lottery. Vince McMahon won a coin toss to earn the 1st draft pick. Any Champion drafted would bring that belt to his brand, while the WWF Undisputed Champion Triple H & WWF Women’s Champion Jazz was not part of a brand & competed on both shows. 62 wrestlers were drafted in 57 picks, with 28 picks for Raw & 29 picks for SD.

2004

There was no draft in 2003, but with WrestleMania 20 having the tag line “Where It All Begins Again”, the now-WWE decided to bring the Draft back. This time instead of the General Managers, now Eric Bischoff for Raw & Paul Heyman for Smackdown, picking their own picks, it was determined by a lottery, by them pulling names out of a tumbler. The Draft was held on March 22, with the 1st 12 picks, while the remaining picks were done through trades, which took place until the next day. No Champions were drafted and remained with their original brands. 20 wrestlers were drafted in 12 picks & 2 trades, with 7 for Raw & 7 for SD.

In 2005, they did the Draft again, but this time instead of all on 1 night, it was held throughout the month of June, on both Raw & Smackdown, from June 6 to June 30, with a Post-Draft trade being held after all the picks were made. The General Managers were Eric Bischoff & Teddy Long. This was the 1st Draft where both Champions were drafted to the other brand, leaving Smackdown without a Champion for a month until Batista was drafted on June 30. 21 wrestlers were drafted in 10 picks & 2 trades, with 6 for Raw & 6 for SD.

There was no Draft in 2006, but since ECW was added, ECW GM Paul Heyman was allowed to draft 4 wrestlers to join his brand. He drafted Rob Van Dam & The Big Show from Raw & Kurt Angle & Tazz from Smackdown.

2007

In 2007, there was the 1st ever Tri-Branded Draft, with Raw, Smackdown, & ECW. It was held on Raw on June 11, 2007. The 1st 10 picks were determined by 9 matches between the brands, so no GMs had involvement in deciding their brand’s picks. Whoever won the match received a pick for that brand, which was determined at random, with 2 picks on the line in the final match. I will not list the matches here, only the draft picks. A Supplemental Draft was held on June 17, on WWE.com for the remaining picks. 27 wrestlers were drafted in 23 picks, with 9 picks for Raw, 8 for SD, & 5 for ECW.

In 2016, Vince McMahon decided to bring back the draft to change things up. He appointed Stephanie McMahon as the Commissioner of Raw & Shane McMahon as the Commissioner of Smackdown, who then appointed Mick Foley & Daniel Bryan as their respective General Managers. For the 1st time, tag teams were allowed to be picked together, unless a GM wants to separate them, and managers were not drafted separately from their wrestler. Also, 6 wrestlers were drafted from NXT. Since Raw is a 3 hour show & Smackdown is a 2 hour show, for every pick Smackdown got, Raw got 2. The Draft was held on Smackdown on July 16, where the 1st 30 picks were announced by each brand. The remaining picks were announced on a special WWE Draft Center Live on the WWE Network. Every one was drafted except for Heath Slater, as well as Nikki Bella, Emma, Luke Harper, & Tamina, who were injured, and Triple H, The Rock, & The Undertaker, who are inactive talents. 69 wrestlers were drafted in 59 picks, with 33 for Raw & 26 for SD.
