HISTORY OF WWE ELIMINATION CHAMBER MATCH

This is a special blog looking at the history of the Elimination Chamber Match. It only includes the matches and not the Pay-Per-Views that featured the matches. Those Pay-Per-Views will have their own pages, eventually here on the site. I will first talk about the history of the match, with different facts about each match. If eliminations are mentioned in this section, only eliminations by multiple wrestlers are listed. Other eliminations done by single wrestlers are not listed. That will be listed in a separate section later on. Then, I will list the  records of all of the Chamber Match participants, all of the matches listed in chronological order, followed by the history of Entrances & Eliminations, and then which matches were Title Matches or #1 Contender’s Matches, as well as any Title Changes that have occurred in the match.

But first, let’s look at what the Elimination Chamber is all about. Though these names have all been used with the Hell In The Cell, the Elimination Chamber has been known as Satan’s Structure or Satan’s Prison. According to WWE.com, it was Triple H’s idea to come up with this new match, but for storyline, it came from the mind of Eric Bischoff in October of 2002. The ring is surrounded by a steel floor, with 4 Chambers or Pods in each corner. The entire structure is 16 feet high, 36 feet in diameter, weighs over 10 tons, with 2 miles & 6 tons of chains. Each chamber is made up of bulletproof Lexan glass, but the glass is not Superstar proof, as several wrestlers have gone through them. 2 men begin the match, with the other 4 Superstars being placed in the 4 Pods. Then, roughly every 5 minutes, though some matches had 4 minute intervals, due to time constraints, a Pod was opened at random, unleashing another Superstar into the match. The match continues until all 6 men have entered the match, though eliminations can occur by pinfall or submission at any time. The last man left after all the other 5 have been eliminated is the winner. The pinfall or submission must occur in the ring, though they have counted on the floor outside the ring, on 2 occasions.

The first Elimination Chamber Match was held at WWE Survivor Series on November 17, 2002 with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the line. The 1st 6 participants were World Champion Triple H, World Tag Team Champion Chris Jericho, Kane, Shawn Michaels, Booker T, & Rob Van Dam. This was Booker’s only Chamber Match. For the 1st match, the wrestlers were released from their Pods in the order they were announced into the ring, meaning that Chris Jericho was the 1st to come out to the ring and was the 1st Superstar released from the Pod after Triple H & Rob Van Dam wrestled for 5 minutes. The 1st ever elimination was Rob Van Dam by Booker T, while Chris Jericho & Triple H were the 1st wrestlers to have 2 eliminations in a Chamber Match. Chris Jericho became the 1st person to get thrown through the bulletproof Pods. Shawn Michaels won the match & became the 1st person to win the match as the final entrant, while Triple H, who entered the match at #1, was the last eliminated. This event also marked the 1st time that the World Heavyweight Championship changed hands inside the Chamber.

The Chamber was brought back the following Summer, at the 2003 SummerSlam, as Triple H, Chris Jericho, & Shawn Michaels made their 2nd Chamber Match appearance, while Goldberg & Kevin Nash, in their only Chamber appearances, & Randy Orton made their debuts. For the 2nd year in a row, Chris Jericho was thrown through the Pod. This was the 2nd straight year that the wrestlers were released from their Pods, in the same order that they were introduced to the ring. Triple H became the 1st person to retain the World Championship inside the Chamber, as he entered the match at #5 & only had 1 elimination to win the match, while Shawn Michaels became the 1st person to go from the last entrant of last year’s match to the 1st entrant of the following year. Goldberg became the 1st person to eliminate 3 people from the match.

After a break with no Chamber Matches in 2004, the Chamber was brought back to crown a new WWE World Heavyweight Champion in January of 2005, at the new Pay-Per-View, New Year’s Revolution. Triple H & Chris Jericho made their 3rd straight Chamber Match, while Shawn Michaels was assigned to be the Special Guest Referee, instead of a participant, Randy Orton made his 2nd straight appearance, while Chris Benoit, in his only Chamber match, Batista, & Edge made their Chamber debuts. This match was the 1st time that the entrances into the match did not match the order of how the wrestlers were introduced. This was the 1st time that Jericho did not get thrown through the Pod. Batista continued the tradition of the previous 2 Chamber Matches, by eliminating 2 people, while Triple H, in winning his 2nd Chamber Match in a row, only eliminated 1 person, after entering the match at #3.

The Chamber returned at the following New Year’s Revolution in 2006, but this time with the WWE Championship on the line. Shawn Michaels returned to the Chamber, in his 3rd match, while Kane competed in his 1st Chamber Match since the 1st match in 2002. Everyone else, Kurt Angle, Carlito, & Chris Masters, in their only Chamber Match, & John Cena all made their Chamber debuts. This was the 1st time that there was no back-to-back entrants in the match & the 1st time that Triple H & Chris Jericho were not in the match. John Cena became the 1st Champion to start the match and retain his title, as he entered at #2, with only 1 elimination. Carlito had the most eliminations, with 3, and was one half of the only Assisted Elimination in Elimination Chamber history, as both he & Chris Masters eliminated Kane.

The Chamber made its 2nd appearance at the end of 2006, with the 1st & only Extreme Elimination Chamber for the ECW Title, at ECW’s December to Dismember. This match had not only wrestlers locked in the Pods, but when they were released, they brought a weapon with them, including a Barbed Wire Baseball Bat, a Chair, a Crowbar, & a Table. This event marked Rob Van Dam’s 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2002, while it marked the only Chamber Match for Bobby Lashley, Hardcore Holly, & Test, & the 1st Chamber Matches for The Big Show & CM Punk. This was the 1st time that a WWE Title was not defended inside a Chamber, but the ECW Title did change hands, as Bobby Lashley, entering at #5, which was the 2nd time that Entrant #5 won the match, defeated The Big Show, who entered last. This was the 1st time that a participant was taken out of the match before hand, as Sabu was attacked backstage and replaced by Hardcore Holly. Test & Lashley had the most eliminations with 2.

After another break, with no Chamber Matches in 2007, the Chamber became the focal point of WWE’s February Pay-Per-View, No Way Out, as a detour on the Road to WrestleMania in 2008. For the 1st time, 2 Chamber Matches occurred on the same night, as neither match had a title defended, as both matches were to determine the #1 Contenders for the World & WWE Championships, going into WrestleMania. The first one for the World Title #1 Contendership saw no back-to-back entrants, as the only wrestler not making his Chamber debut in the match, was Batista, who entered the match for the 1st time since 2005, while Finlay, MVP, & Big Daddy V made their only Chamber appearances, & The Undertaker & The Great Khali made their Chamber debuts. This match was billed as the Largest Chamber Match in WWE History, due to the weight of everyone involved. This marked the 1st time that someone got thrown through the door and out on the floor, as Big Daddy V did to The Undertaker & marked the 1st of 2 times that someone was pinned on the floor of the Chamber instead of in the ring, as The Undertaker pinned Finlay. The Undertaker had the most eliminations with 3, & he & Batista were the 1st wrestlers to start the match & be the final 2 to end the match.

The 2nd match of 2008 for the #1 Contendership for the WWE Title saw Triple H, Chris Jericho, & Shawn Michaels in their 4th Chamber Match, with Triple H & Jericho competing for the 1st time since 2005 & Michaels competing for the 1st time since 2006. It also saw the only Chamber match for John Bradshaw Layfield & Umaga, & Jeff Hardy’s Chamber debut. Triple H & Chris Jericho had the most eliminations with 2 each. Triple H won the match, for the 3rd time, and at Entrant #5 for the 2nd time.

In 2009, the Chamber returned to No Way Out, with 2 Chamber Matches being held, but both titles were on the line, instead of #1 Contenderships. This was the 1st time that a Chamber Match was both the opener & main event of a Pay-Per-View. Triple H, in his 5th Chamber Match & Jeff Hardy in his 2nd Chamber match in a row, became the 1st wrestlers to go from the main event of one year to the opening match of the following year’s Chamber. Also, in this match for the 2nd straight year was The Undertaker, in his 2nd Chamber Match, The Big Show in his 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2006, Edge in his 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2004, & Vladimir Kozlov, in his 1st & only Chamber Match. This was the 1st Chamber match to not have any blood shed. It was the 1st time that a defending Champion, Edge was the 1st entrant & the 1st person eliminated from the match, guaranteeing a new Champion would be crowned. Triple H & The Undertaker had the most eliminations with 2 each. Triple H, winning the match for a 4th time, & for the 3rd time at Entrant #5, became the 1st person to win a WWE Championship in 2 separate Chamber Matches, & the 1st person to win 2 Chamber Matches back-to-back.

In the 2nd match of No Way Out 2009 for the WWE World Championship, Edge became the 1st person to compete in 2 Chamber Matches on the same night, as he took out Kofi Kingston, prior to Kingston’s entrance and stole his spot in the match. Besides Edge making his 3rd Chamber appearance, this match saw John Cena’s 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2006, Jericho’s 5th Chamber Match & 2nd straight, Kane’s 3rd Chamber Match & 1st since 2006, Mike Knox’s only Chamber Match, & Rey Mysterio’s Chamber debut. Edge & Rey Mysterio had the most eliminations with 2. Rey Mysterio was the 3rd wrestler to start the match & be one of the final participants of the match. Edge became the 3rd wrestler & 4th time to win the match as Entrant #5.

Even though for 2 years prior, the Elimination Chamber was the focus of the No Way Out Pay-Per-View, in 2010, No Way Out was renamed WWE Elimination Chamber to continue the importance of the Chamber Match as the Road to WrestleMania took that dangerous detour into Satan’s Structure. And once again, both titles were on the line inside the Chamber & for the 1st time both titles changed hands, as the Chamber opened & main evented the show. In the 1st match for the WWE Title, Triple H competed for the 6th time & 3rd in a row, John Cena competed in his 3rd Chamber & 2nd in a row, Randy Orton competed in his 3rd Chamber & 1st since 2005, Ted DiBiase competed in his only Chamber Match, while Kofi Kingston & Sheamus competed in their 1st Chamber Match. This was the 1st time that the order of the Pods being released was the opposite of the order that the wrestlers came to the ring, meaning, the final 2 guys announced were the 1st to start the match, the 4th wrestler announced was the 1st to be released from their Pod, the 3rd wrestler announced was the 2nd to be released, etc, until the 1st wrestler announced was the last man to enter the match. This was the 1st time that there were no double eliminations, as everyone but the 1st wrestler eliminated eliminated someone from the match, as the man who did the previous elimination was the next person eliminated. John Cena won the match for the 2nd time, as Entrant #6, while the defending Champion, Sheamus started the match.

The 2nd Chamber Match of 2010 saw the World Title change hands, as Chris Jericho made his 6th appearance in a Chamber Match, Rey Mysterio’s 2nd Chamber Match in a row, Undertaker’s 3rd straight Chamber Match, CM Punk’s 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2006, & John Morrison’s Chamber debut. It is the only time that none of the participants were competing in their only Chamber Match. Once again, like the previous match, there were no multiple eliminations, as everyone that eliminated someone was eliminated next. This match marked the 1st time that someone not in the match was involved in an elimination, as Shawn Michaels came out from underneath the Chamber to cost the Undertaker his title against Chris Jericho, who won the match as Entrant #4, & was the 1st person since Edge, to win the Chamber for the 1st time.

At Elimination Chamber 2011, once again there was 2 Chamber Matches, but this time, once was for the World Title, while the other was for the #1 Contendership for the WWE Title. The World Title opened up the show, with Edge, in his 4th Chamber Match, & 1st since 2009, Rey Mysterio in his 3rd Chamber Match in a row, The Big Show in his 3rd Chamber Match & 1st since 2008, Kane in his 4th Chamber Match & 1st since 2009, Drew McIntyre in his only Chamber Match, & Wade Barrett in his Chamber debut. Wade Barrett became the 1st person to get thrown through the Pod twice in the same match, as both Rey Mysterio & The Big Show did it. Kane & Edge had the most eliminations with 2 each. Edge & Rey Mysterio were both the 1st 2 wrestlers & final 2 wrestlers in the match, making Edge, the 1st wrestler since The Undertaker in 2008, to win the match as Entrant #1.

The 2nd Chamber Match in 2011 saw the Chamber decide the #1 Contendership for the WWE Title, as John Cena competed in his 4th Chamber Match & 3rd in a row, Randy Orton competed in his 4th Chamber Match & 2nd in a row, CM Punk competed in his 3rd Chamber Match & 2nd in a row, Sheamus & John Morrison competed in their 2nd Chamber Matches in a row, & R-Truth competed in his 1st Chamber Match. This Chamber Match saw the 1st restart in Chamber Match history, as CM Punk’s Pod malfunctioned, giving him trouble, leading to Randy Orton attacking him and quickly eliminating him. Because of this the Anonymous Raw General Manager allowed Punk to re-enter his Pod & continue the match later on. John Morrison joined Wade Barrett as wrestlers that went through a Pod twice, as Randy Orton threw him through it & then he threw himself through it. For the 2nd & to date final time, in Chamber History, a pinfall occurred outside the ring & on the Chamber floor, as John Cena pinned CM Punk. Punk had the most eliminations with 2. John Cena, winning the match as Entrant #4, had only 1 elimination.

In 2012, 2 Chamber Matches were held again at WWE No Way Out, with both titles on the line, & for the 1st time both titles were retained. In the 1st one for the WWE Title, CM Punk competed in his 4th Match & 3rd in a row, as he went from the main event of last year’s Chamber to the opening of this year’s. Also in the match were Chris Jericho in his 7th Chamber Match & 1st since 2010, Kofi Kingston in his 2nd match & 1st since 2010, R-Truth in his 2nd Chamber Match in a row, & Dolph Ziggler & The Miz, making their Chamber debuts. Once again, the defending Champion was the 1st entrant & won the match. CM Punk & Chris Jericho had 2 eliminations each. Chris Jericho was the 1st wrestler to be eliminated not by pinfall or submission, as he was unable to continue the match. CM Punk threw him through the door and he landed on a cameraman and became unconscious, forcing the doctors to declare him unable to continue.

In the 2nd Chamber Match for the World Title, which was the 1st time that a Chamber Match was not the Main Event of a Pay-Per-View, The Big Show competed in his 4th Chamber Match & 2nd in a row, The Great Khali competed in his 2nd Chamber match & 1st since 2008, Wade Barrett competed in his 2nd Chamber Match in a row, Santino Marella & Cody Rhodes competed in their only Chamber Matches, & Daniel Bryan competed in his 1st Chamber Match. This match marked the 1st time that someone broke into a Pod to attack a participant, as The Big Show broke the chains on top of the Pod to attack Daniel Bryan. Santino Marella had the most eliminations with 2. Daniel Bryan won the match, as Entrant #6.

In 2013, for the 1st time since 2006, there was only 1 Chamber Match held, as this one was for the #1 Contendership for the World Title. This match marked Daniel Bryan’s 2nd Chamber Match in a row, Chris Jericho’s 8th & final Chamber Match, & 2nd in a row, Kane’s 5th Chamber Match & 1st since 2011, Randy Orton’s 5th Chamber Match & 1st since 2011, & Jack Swagger’s 1st & only Chamber Match & Mark Henry’s 1st Chamber Match. This was the only Chamber Match where Tag Team Champions were both in the match at the same time. This was the 1st time that the Chamber Match was not the opener or main event, but the 3rd match on the show. Mark Henry & Randy Orton had the most eliminations with 2. Jack Swagger won the match, as Entrant #3.

In 2014, the Chamber Match returned to the main event, as once again, only 1 Chamber Match was held, with the World Title on the line. It was Randy Orton’s 6th Chamber Match & 2nd in a row, John Cena’s 5th Chamber Match & 1st since 2011, Sheamus’ 3rd Chamber Match & 1st since 2011, Daniel Bryan’s 3rd Chamber Match in a row, Christian’s only Chamber Match, & Cesaro’s Chamber debut. Randy Orton had the most eliminations with 2, as he won the match as Entrant #6. For the 2nd time, someone not part of the match caused an elimination, as The Wyatt Family interfered, costing John Cena the match.

In 2015, it looked like it was going to be the end of the Elimination Chamber, as WWE replaced the Elimination Chamber Pay-Per-View with WWE Fastlane, but once again the WWE surprised us during the May Pay-Per-View, WWE Payback. During that show, they announced that the Elimination Chamber was returning on May 31, as a WWE Network Exclusive Special. For the 1st time, the WWE or World Title were not defended, as 2 Chamber Matches were held, one for the Vacant Intercontinental Championship & the other for the Tag Team Championship in the 1st ever 6 Team Elimination Chamber Match. The Tag Team Championship Match started off the show, which was the 1st time since 2012 that happened. Since it was a Tag Team Chamber Match, 2 men, & in the case of The New Day, 3 men were locked in the Pods, and then released into the match. The only 2 competitors to return to the Chamber were Cesaro for the 2nd year in row & Kofi Kingston, in his 3rd Chamber Match & 1st since 2012. Everyone else: Big E, Xavier Woods, Konnor, Viktor, Sin Cara, Kalisto, Tyson Kidd, Titus O’Neil, Darren Young, Diego, & Fernando were all making their Chamber debut. And since this was the most men held in the Chamber, it was the most men to make their debut in a Chamber Match. This match also saw the 1st ever appearance of a bull in a Chamber Match, as El Torito got involved. The Ascension & The Prime Time Players both had the most eliminations, with 2 eliminations each, while The New Day won the match, as Entrant #6. The Intercontinental Championship Match was held later on. It saw the Chamber debut of Ryback, making this the 1st Chamber Match since 2011 that only 1 wrestler made its debut. Joining Ryback was Sheamus, in his 4th Chamber Match & 2nd in a row, Mark Henry, in his 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2013, Dolph Ziggler, in his 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2012, & King Barrett & R-Truth’s 3rd Chamber Match & 1st since 2012. This Chamber Match saw the 1st time that someone was released from their Pod early, as Dolph Ziggler got thrown through Mark Henry’s Pod by King Barrett and Henry came out to attack Barrett. The referee allowed him to continue the match. Also, Sheamus’ Pod was stuck and he couldn’t come out when he was supposed to, but it turned that he did that on purpose, using his cross. Ziggler also went through a Pod a 2nd time, later on by Sheamus, making it the 1st time that happened since 2011. Ryback & Sheamus were tied with 2 eliminations each, while Ryback won the match, as Entrant # 5.

In 2017, the Elimination Chamber PPV returned, as a Smackdown Brand Exclusive PPV, with an All-New much larger Chamber. There was 1 Elimination Chamber Match for the WWE Championship, which was the 1st time since 2012. There were only 2 competitors that had previous Chamber Match experience, with John Cena & The Miz. John Cena competed in his 6th Chamber Match & 1st since 2014, tying him with Triple H & Randy Orton, for the 2nd most appearances in a Chamber Match. The Miz competed in his 2nd Chamber Match & 1st since 2012. The other 4 participants, Dean Ambrose, Baron Corbin, AJ Styles, & Bray Wyatt all made their Chamber debuts, which was the 1st time since 2006 that 4 wrestlers made their debut in the same match. For the 5th time, someone won the Chamber Match in their debut appearance, as Bray Wyatt won. He was the 3rd person to win as Entrant #4, & the 1st since John Cena in 2011. He also had the most eliminations with 2.

Before I get into the Wrestler’s Records, I thought I would share other facts that I didn’t list above. There has been 64 participants in the 20 Elimination Chamber Matches, with 39 men competing in only 1 Chamber Match, 10 competing in 2, 4 competing in 3 & 4 Chamber Matches, 3 have competed in 6 Chamber Matches, & only Chris Jericho, competing in the most Chamber Matches, at 8. Jack Swagger, Bobby Lashley, Big E, Xavier Woods, Ryback, & Bray Wyatt are the only wrestlers to win in their only Chamber Match. Kofi Kingston won on his 3rd try. Both Chris Jericho & Edge won their 1st Chamber Match on their 6th try. Kane has lost the most Chamber Matches without a win, at 5. Triple H has won the matches, at 4, which he did all in a row. John Cena won 3 matches, including 2 back-to-back. Edge is the only wrestler to win & lose 2 Chamber Matches in the same night. There has been 4 #1 Contender’s Matches, 1 ECW Championship Match, 1 Intercontinental Championship Match, 1 Tag Team Championship Match, 5 WWE Championship Matches, & 8 World Championship Matches. There has been 9 Title Changes, with 1 ECW Title, 1 Intercontinental Title, 4 World Title, & 3 WWE Title Changes. The Big Show, John Cena, & The Undertaker have all entered the match as the 6th entrant twice, Edge, Chris Jericho, & Sheamus have all entered the match as the 1st entrant twice, which Shawn Michaels has been the 1st entrant 3 times. Kofi Kingston & Rey Mysterio have entered the match as the 2nd entrant twice. Kane has been the 4th entrant twice. Triple H has been the 3rd entrant twice & the 5th entrant 3 times. Chris Jericho has been an entrant at every number, including 1 twice & 2 3 times, except entrant 5. Randy Orton has been entrant 3 twice, entrant 5 twice, but has never been entrant 1 or 2. The winner has been the 1st entrant 3 times, the 2nd entrant once, the 3rd entrant twice, the 4th entrant 3 times, the 5th entrant 6 times, & the 6th entrant 5 times. Chris Jericho has had the most eliminations, with 10. The Winner has won by eliminating 1 participant 9 times, 2 participants 10 times, & 3 participants once.
