2017 WWE BACKLASH PPV PARTICIPANTS’ HISTORY

Since the Main Event has not been announced, here are the facts about the Main Event. If the WWE Championship is defended in the main event, then it will be the 11th time that the WWE Title is defended in the main event of a Backlash PPV & 2nd year in a row. It will be Randy Orton’s 1st Backlash PPV main event since 2008. It will be Jinder Mahal’s 1st Backlash main event. If the United States Championship Match is the main event, it will be AJ Styles’ 2nd year in a row in the Backlash main event, Kevin Owens’ Backlash main event debut, & the 1st US Title Match to be the main event. If Shinsuke Nakamura VS Dolph Ziggler is the main event, then it will be both wrestlers’ 1st Backlash main event & the 1st Non-Title Match to main event Backlash since Goldberg VS The Rock in 2003.

 

No opening matches have been announced, so here are the facts about the Opening Match. The only wrestlers scheduled to compete that has competed in an opening match are Becky Lynch, Carmella, Naomi, & Natalya, who all competed last year. It will be everyone’s else’s 1st opening match at a Backlash PPV.

 

WWE CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: WWE CHAMPION RANDY ORTON VS JINDER MAHAL

This will be the 18th WWE/World/Undisputed/ECW Championship Match at a Backlash PPV & 2nd year in a row. The WWE/World/Undisputed/ECW Title has changed hands 8 times, with the title last changing hands in 2016, but it has changed hands at the last 4 Backlash PPVs. This will be Randy Orton’s 6th Backlash PPV & 2nd in a row, his 4th WWE Title Match at a Backlash PPV, & 1st since 2009. This will be Mahal’s Backlash PPV debt.

WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: AJ STYLES VS WWE UNITED STATES CHAMPION KEVIN OWENS

This will be the 3rd United States Championship Match at a Backlash PPV & 1st since 2008. The US Title has only changed hands once at a Backlash PPV, in 2008. This will be the 1st US Title Match to not feature MVP. This will be AJ Styles’ 2nd Backlash PPV in a row, 2nd Title Match at a Backlash PPV, but 1st US Title Match. This will be Kevin Owens’ Backlash PPV debut.

WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: BREEZANGO (TYLER BREEZE & FANDANGO) VS WWE SMACKDOWN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE USOS (JEY & JIMMY USO)

This will be the 9th Tag Team/World Tag Team/Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match at a Backlash PPV & 2nd in a row. The Tag Team/World Tag Team/Smackdown Tag Team Title has changed hands 3 times, with the last title change taking place in 2016. This will be Tyler Breeze & Fandango’s Backlash PPV debut. This will be Jey & Jimmy Uso’s 3rd match at a Backlash PPV, but 2nd Backlash PPV, since they competed twice in 2016. It will be their 2nd Tag Team Title Match in a row at a Backlash PPV. They will become the 1st Tag Team to compete in 3 Tag Team Matches at a Backlash PPV.

It will be the 1st 6-Women’s Tag Team Match at a Backlash PPV & 1st Multi-Women’s Match since a 12-Women’s Tag Team Match in 2008. This will be Charlotte Flair’s Backlash PPV debut. This will be Becky Lynch’s 2nd Backlash PPV in a row & 1st 6-Women’s Tag Team Match. This will be Naomi’s 2nd Backlash PPV in a row & 1st 6-Women’s Tag Team Match. This will be Carmella’s 2nd Backlash PPV in a row & 1st 6-Women’s Tag Team Match. This will be Natalya’s 3rd Backlash PPV & 2nd in a row, & 1st Multi-Women’s Tag Team Match since a 12-Women’s Tag Team Match in 2008. This will be Tamina’s Backlash PPV debut.
