HISTORY OF THE HELL IN THE CELL MATCH

In the Pay-Per-View History section of the site, you will see the history of the WWE Hell In A Cell Pay-Per-View, which started in 2009. This special blog will look at the actual Hell In A Cell Match that has taken place at all events and those matches’ participants. This is now updated with last year’s results, as well as with a list of all of the matches in chronological order. Also, instead of the wrestler’s records in order of wins & losses, I did it in alphabetical order.

Hell In A Cell has been used at least once a year since it’s debut in 1997. The only year there was no Cell matches was in 2001. The first Hell In A Cell Match took place at WWE In Your House: Badd Blood on October 3, 1997 and featured The Undertaker VS Shawn Michaels. This match also featured the debut of Kane. The 2nd Cell match was the 1st one televised on Monday Night Raw and was the 1st tag team Cell Match, with Steve Austin, in his Cell debut, & The Undertaker, in his 2nd Cell Match, VS Kane & Mankind, in their debuts, on June 15, 1998. The next match, which took place 13 days later, on June 28, 1998, at WWE King of The Ring, is probably the most infamous one, as Mankind, in his 2nd Cell Match, wrestled The Undertaker, in his 3rd Cell Match. 2 months later, on August 24, 1998, we had our 2nd, and to date, last Cell Match on TV, with the 1st Cell Match to not feature The Undertaker, as Mankind, in his 3rd Cell Match, wrestled Kane, in his 2nd Cell Match. This matched ended in a No Contest, which was the only time a Cell Match did not have a winner. Undertaker, in his 4th Cell Match, was next featured in the 1st of only 3 Cell Matches to take place at a WrestleMania, as he faced The Big Boss Man, in his Cell debut, at WrestleMania 15 on March 28, 1999. The next Cell Match was at No Way Out on February 27, 2000, as Triple H, in his Cell debut, wrestled Cactus Jack, in Mick Foley’s 4th Cell Match. That match was the 1st Cell Match where the WWE Title was on the line. Later that year, on December 10, 2000, we had our only 6-Man Cell Match, at WWE Armageddon, which featured Kurt Angle, in his Cell debut, Steve Austin, in his 2nd & 1st since 1998, Triple H in his 2nd Cell Match in the same year, Rikishi, in his Cell debut, The Rock, in his Cell debut, & The Undertaker in his 5th Cell Match.

After a year off, the Cell returned at WWE Judgment Day on May 19, 2002, as Triple H, in his 3rd Cell Match, wrestled Chris Jericho, in his Cell debut. Then, later that year, on October 20, 2002, at WWE No Mercy, the Cell returned as Brock Lesnar, in his Cell debut, wrestled The Undertaker, in his 6th Cell Match. On June 15, 2003, the Pay-Per-View where the Cell was born, returned, as at WWE Bad Blood, Triple H, in his 4th Cell Match, wrestled Kevin Nash, in his Cell debut. The Cell returned a year later at the next Bad Blood Pay-Per-View, when Triple H, in his 5th Cell Match, wrestled Shawn Michaels, in his 2nd & 1st since 1997, in the longest Cell Match in history at 47:26, on June 13, 2004. WWE Bad Blood was replaced by WWE Vengeance, on June 26, 2005, as Triple H, in his 6th Cell Match, wrestled Batista, in his Cell debut, in Triple H’s 3rd year in a row inside the Cell. On December 18, 2005, we had the 2nd Cell Match of the year, as The Undertaker, in his 6th Cell Match, wrestled Randy Orton, in his Cell debut, at WWE Armageddon. At WWE Unforgiven, on September 17, 2006, we had our 1st and only 3-on-2 Handicap Cell Match, as D-Generation X, giving Triple H his 7th Cell Match, & Shawn Michaels, in his 3rd Cell Match, faced The Big Show, & Shane & Vince McMahon, in their Cell debuts. On November 18, 2007, The Undertaker, in his 7th Cell Match, wrestled Batista, in his 2nd Cell Match, at WWE Survivor Series. Next, at WWE SummerSlam on August 17, 2008, The Undertaker, in his 8th Cell Match, wrestled against Edge, in his Cell debut.

In 2009, WWE gave the Cell its own Pay-Per-View, as WWE Hell In Cell began on October 4, 2009. The inaugural event featured 3 Cell Matches, which included The Undertaker, in his 9th Cell Match, VS CM Punk, in his Cell debut, which was the 1st time a Cell Match opened up a Pay-Per-View, John Cena, in his Cell debut, VS Randy Orton, in his 2nd Cell Match, in the 1st Cell Match to not feature either Triple H or Undertaker since Mankind VS Kane in 1998, & in the main event, D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels in his 4th Cell Match & Triple H in his 8th Cell Match), wrestled Legacy of Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes, in their Cell debuts. Also, the 2009 Cell Matches were the 1st time that the WWE & World Titles both changed hands inside the Cell.

The 2010 Hell In A Cell Pay-Per-View on October 3 saw 2 Cell Matches, as Randy Orton, in his 3rd Cell Match, wrestled Sheamus, in his Cell debut, & The Undertaker, in his 10th Cell Match, wrestled Kane, in his 3rd Cell Match & 1st since 1998. In 2011, we had 2 Cell Matches, with one that has never been seen by the WWE Universe. On September 26, prior to the 2011 Hell In A Cell Pay-Per-View, after Raw went off the air, we had the only 5-Way Cell Match, as John Cena, in his 2nd Cell Match, wrestled CM Punk in his 2nd Cell Match, & Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger, & Dolph Ziggler in their Cell debuts. According to WWE, they count this match in the history of the Cell, but there is no video footage of the match, and only pictures. This was a preview of the following week’s Pay-Per-View on October 2, 2011, as Cena, in his 3rd Cell Match, Del Rio, in his 2nd Cell Match, & Punk, in his 3rd Cell Match, competed in the only Triple Threat Hell In A Cell Match. The other Cell Match featured on the show was Mark Henry, in his Cell debut, VS Randy Orton, in his 4th Cell Match.

In 2012, the Cell was featured twice. For the 2nd time the Cell was featured on WWE’s Biggest Show of the Year, as at WrestleMania 28, on April 1, The Undertaker, in his 11th Cell Match, wrestled Triple H, in his 9th Cell Match. This match would be the final time Triple H has competed inside the Devil’s Playground. The Cell was used later in 2012, at the WWE Hell In A Cell Pay-Per-View, on October 28, as CM Punk, in his 4th Cell Match, faced Ryback, in his Cell debut. In 2013, on October 27, CM Punk, in his 5th Cell Match, & Ryback, in his 2nd Cell Match, returned to the Cell, but this time added Paul Heyman to the mix, to make it a 2-on-1 Handicap Match. The other Cell Match in 2013 featured Daniel Bryan, in his Cell debut, & Randy Orton, in his 5th Cell Match, for the Vacant WWE Championship. On October 26, 2014, we saw our 1st ever 2-time Hell In A Cell Match, as John Cena, in his 4th Cell Match, wrestled Randy Orton, in his 6th Cell Match, again inside the Cell for the 1st time since 2009. The 2nd Cell Match in 2014 saw the 1st ever Cell Match since Orton VS Cena in 2009 to feature 2 wrestlers making their Cell debuts, as Dean Ambrose wrestled Seth Rollins.

On October 25, 2015, the Devil’s Playground returned for WWE Hell In A Cell, with 2 Cell Matches. For the 2nd straight year, 2 wrestlers made their Cell debut as Roman Reigns wrestled Bray Wyatt. Then, the 2nd match to take place twice inside the Cell happened, as The Undertaker, in his 1st Cell Match since 2008 & 13th Cell match overall, wrestled Brock Lesnar, in his 2nd Cell Match & 1st since 2002, which was also against The Undertaker.

In 2016, the Cell was brought back for the 3rd time at WrestleMania, as Shane McMahon, in his 2nd time inside the Cell & 1st since 2006, faced off against The Undertaker, competing in his 14th Cell Match, & 2nd straight. The Cell made its 2nd appearance in October at the Hell in A Cell PPV, with 3 Cell Matches taking place, making it the 1st time that 4 Cell Matches took place in the same year. For the 1st time since 2009, a Cell Match opened up a Hell in A Cell PPV, with the 1st ever United States Championship Match contested inside the Cell, as Roman Reigns, in his 2nd Cell Match in a row, wrestled Rusev, in his 1st ever Cell Match. Then, the Universal Title was on the line for the 1st time inside the Cell as Seth Rollins, in his 2nd Cell Match & 1st since 2014, wrestled Kevin Owens, in his Cell debut. Then, in the main event, for the 1st time ever, 2 women competed inside Satan’s Structure, as Sasha Banks defended her Raw Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair, which was the 3rd year in a row that both participants made their Cell debut in the same match.

In 2017, 2 more Cell Matches took place during the Hell In A Cell PPV. For the 1st time ever, Tag Team Championships were decided inside the Hell in A Cell as The New Day wrestled The Usos. It was both members of The New Day, Big E & Xavier Woods, & Jey & Jimmy Uso’s Cell debut, which made it the 4th year in a row that all participants will made their Cell debuts. It was the 4th tag team match to be contested inside the Cell & the 1st since 2009. The Usos joined their father Rikishi, as the 2nd father & son after Vince & Shane McMahon to both compete inside the Hell in A Cell. The other Cell Match saw Shane McMahon, in his 3rd Hell In A Cell & 2nd year in a row, wrestle Kevin Owens, in his 2nd straight Cell Match in a row. It was also the 1st time since 2015 that no WWE or Universal Championships were defended inside the Hell In A Cell.

NXT TAKEOVER: BROOKLYN III PARTICIPANTS’ HISTORY

Since I do the blogs looking at every Pay-Per-View every month, I thought I would do one looking at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III, now that I have NXT Takeover Section here on the site. To see the entire history of Takeover, visit the Takeover History HERE. And for any feedback or comments about this, comment below or tweet me (@hbkid718). Thanks.

Since no opening match has been announced, here are the facts about it. No matter who is in the opening match, it will be the 1st time since Takeover: Brooklyn II on 8/20/16 that it will not feature either Tye Dillinger or Eric Young. The only wrestlers on the card to compete in an opening match is Bobby Roode, who last competed in an opening match at Takeover: Toronto on November 19, 2016, Andrade Almas, who last competed in an opening match at Takeover: The End on June 8, 2016, & Asuka, who last competed in an opening match at Takeover: London on December 6, 2015. HISTORY OF THE MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH

This blog will look at the history of the Money In The Bank Ladder Match. If you want the history of the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View, then read the WWE Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View History in the Pay-Per-View History Section of this Site.

The Money In The Bank Ladder Match was an idea that Chris Jericho came up with and suggested to Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff, in storyline. The match is held between several wrestlers, with the least being 5 & the most being 10. All of the men are in the ring at one time. The object of the match is to use a ladder and retrieve a briefcase hanging above the ring. Inside the briefcase is a Contract for a shot at the WWE or World Heavyweight Championship. The contract is good for up to 1 year and the holder can challenger the Champion of his choosing, until there was 2 Contracts for each respective Title, at the time of his choosing. Most of the challengers cashed in their contracts when the champion was the most vulnerable, after they already had a grueling match or after being attacked by another wrestler. A few wrestlers announced their cash-in ahead of time. For more on the cash-ins, look at the Cash-In Section later on in this blog. Out of the 16 Money In The Bank Winners, only 3 of them were unsuccessful with their cash-ins. Now, here’s a look at each Money In The Bank Match. This will be followed by the list of all of the Money In The Bank Ladder Match Participants and their records, then all of the matches in chronological order, then by gimmicks & titles, and then all of the cash-ins will be listed. Instead of writing Money In The Bank over again, I will use the abbreviation MITB. Also, if a cash-in took place on a Smackdown taping, I will count the date as when the show aired and not when it was filmed.

The 1st MITB Ladder Match took place at WrestleMania 21 in 2005. The first 6 participants were Edge, Shelton Benjamin, Christian, Chris Jericho, Kane, & in his only MITB Match, Chris Benoit. The 1st MITB Match was for a World Championship shot, but since the World Champion at the time, Batista, was a Smackdown Superstar & the WWE Champion at the time John Cena was a Raw Superstar, when it came to the 1st winner, which was Edge, cashing in, he chose to do it on WWE Champion John Cena, since he was the Ultimate Opportunist. Edge held the contract for 280 days, becoming the person to hold the contract the longest, when he defeated John Cena, who just retained his title in a grueling Elimination Chamber Match at New Year’s Revolution on January 8, 2006.

The MITB Match then became a tradition the following year, when it was held again at WrestleMania 22 in 2006. But this time, it wasn’t just for a World Championship shot, but for either the WWE or World Championship, whichever the winner would choose. This event marked the 2nd straight appearance for Shelton Benjamin, who was the only person to be in both the 1st 2 MITB Matches. He also competed in both matches as WWE Intercontinental Champion. Making their debut in this match was Rob Van Dam, Finlay, Matt Hardy, & in their only MITB Matches, Ric Flair & Bobby Lashley. Van Dam became the 2nd person in a row to win the MITB Match in his debut. Van Dam became the 1st person to announce when he was going to cash-in, when he said he would face WWE Champion John Cena at ECW One Night Stand. Van Dam would beat Cena at that event on June 11, 2006, holding the contract for 70 days.

In 2007, we saw the 3rd MITB Match at WrestleMania 23. And once again, the winner could cash-in on either Champion. Shelton Benjamin did not participate this year for the 1st time, but instead Finlay & Matt Hardy returned for their 2nd MITB Match. Edge also returned for his 2nd MITB Match, after not competing in 2006. Making their MITB debuts were Mr. Kennedy, Jeff Hardy, Randy Orton, CM Punk, & in his only MITB Match, King Booker. This match upped the participants from 6 to 8. For the 3rd year in a row, someone making their debut won the match, as Mr. Kennedy won the match. Mr. Kennedy became the 1st person to lose his briefcase before getting a chance to cash it in, as 36 days after winning the match, Edge challenged him to put the briefcase on the line in a match, on Raw, on May 7, 2007. Then, 4 days later on Smackdown, on May 11, 2007, Edge cashed-in on World Champion The Undertaker, who had just defeated Batista in a Steel Cage Match & was attacked by Mark Henry, making the 1st time that the MITB Winner cashed-in on a World Champion. WWE does acknowledge the change in briefcase holder, therefore Edge is the 1st 2-time MITB Contract Winner, though he only won 1 MITB Ladder Match.

The tradition continued in 2008, with the MITB Match being held again at WrestleMania 24. This year, the participants were 1 less, as there were only 7, instead of 8. Matt Hardy was scheduled to be the 8th participant, but was injured by MVP prior to WrestleMania, but he did interfere in the match. This event marked the 3rd MITB Match for Shelton Benjamin, competing for the 1st time since 2006, Chris Jericho’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2005, CM Punk & Mr. Kennedy’s 2nd MITB in a row, & the debuts of MVP, John Morrison, & in his only MITB Match, Carlito. Jericho was the 1st Intercontinental Champion since Benjamin in 2006 to compete in the match, & MVP & John Morrison were the 1st United States & Tag Team Champions, respectively, to participate in the match. CM Punk became the 1st person to win the match in his 2nd MITB Match, instead of in his debut, as the 3 previous winners. Punk held the contract for 92 days until he cashed-in successfully against World Champion Edge on Raw on June 30, 2008, after Edge was attacked by Batista.

In 2009, for the 5th straight year, a MITB Match was held at WrestleMania 25, which returned to having 8 participants. Returning to this match was CM Punk for the 3rd straight year, MVP for the 2nd straight year, also as United States Champion, & Shelton Benjamin, for the 2nd year in a row, but 4th appearance. This match was Finlay’s 3rd MITB Match, but 1st since 2007, Christian & Kane’s 2nd MITB Match, but 1st since 2005, & the MITB debuts for Mark Henry & Kofi Kingston. After 4 years of just plain black briefcases, 2009 was the 1st match to have the WrestleMania 25 logo on the briefcase. CM Punk became the 1st & only person to win back-to-back MITB Matches. Punk would then hold the briefcase for 63 days, before successfully cashing-in for the 2nd year in a row, but this time, against World Champion Jeff Hardy at WWE Extreme Rules on June 7, 2009, after Hardy won the title from Edge in a Ladder Match.

We then saw the final MITB Match to take place at WrestleMania 26, as in 2010, WWE decided to give the MITB Match its own Pay-Per-View in July. But before that, at WrestleMania, we saw the 1st ever 10-Way MITB Match. This event marked the 2nd straight match for Kofi Kingston, the 2nd in row but 3rd match overall for Christian & Kane, the 3rd in row for MVP, the 3rd in row, but 1st since 2007 for Matt Hardy, the 3rd in row, but 5th overall for Shelton Benjamin, & the MITB debuts for Evan Bourne, Drew McIntyre, Jack Swagger, & Dolph Ziggler. McIntyre was the Intercontinental Champion, which was the 1st time that the Intercontinental Champion was in the match since 2008. Swagger became the 1st person since Mr. Kennedy in 2007 to win the MITB Match in his debut. Swagger would hold the record for cashing-in the briefcase in the shortest time, until the record was broken a few months later, when he defeated World Champion Chris Jericho on Smackdown, on April 2, 2010, after Jericho was attacked by Edge, only 5 days later.

In July of 2010, MITB was given its own Pay-Per-View, with 2 MITB being held, with 2 contracts on the line, one for a WWE Championship match & the other for a World Championship Match, therefore making 2010 the only time 3 MITB Matches were held in the same year. This match marked the 1st time that several wrestlers competed in 2 back-to-back MITB Matches in the same year, as Kofi Kingston, in his 3rd MITB Match, Drew McIntyre & Dolph Ziggler, in their 2nd MITB Match, Christian & Kane, in their 4th MITB Match, & Matt Hardy, in his 4th overall MITB, all competed in their 2nd MITB Match in 2010. This match marked the MITB debuts for The Big Show & Cody Rhodes. Kane won the match after his 4th MITB Match, giving him the record for the most MITB Matches before his 1st win. Kane would also make history by being the 1st person to cash-in his briefcase on the same night he won it, as only 48 minutes later, he would defeat World Champion Rey Mysterio, who just defended his title against Jack Swagger.

Also at Money In The Bank in 2010, a shot at the WWE Championship was on the line in a MITB Match. Evan Bourne was the only person in this match to compete in the WrestleMania MITB earlier in the year. This event marked Randy Orton’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2007, Mark Henry’s 2nd year in a row, John Morrison’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2008, Chris Jericho’s 3rd & 1st since 2008, & Edge’s 3rd MITB Match & 1st since 2007. This event marked the MITB debut of The Miz, & Ted DiBiase, in his only MITB Match. The Miz became the 1st & only Champion of any kind, as he was United States Champion, to win a MITB Match & was the 1st US Champion since 2009 to compete in a MITB Match. This was the 2nd straight year that someone won in his debut MITB Match. The Miz would cash-in his contract 127 days later, by defeating WWE Champion Randy Orton on Raw on November 27, 2010, after Orton defeated Wade Barrett & was then attacked by The Nexus.

In 2011, once again, we had 2 MITB Matches at the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View. First, for the 2nd straight year, the MITB Match for the World Championship Contract opened up the Pay-Per-View. This match marked the 2nd straight MITB Match for Cody Rhodes & Kane’s 5th MITB Match & 4th in a row. This match was the MITB debuts for Wade Barrett, Daniel Bryan, Sin Cara, Sheamus, & in their only MITB Match, Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater, making this match the one to have the most wrestlers making their debuts in a MITB Match. This was the 1st time since 2007 that there was no Intercontinental or United States Champion in a MITB Match. Daniel Bryan won the match, making it the 3rd year in a row someone won his debut MITB Match. Bryan would hold the briefcase for 154 days, before cashing-in on World Champion The Big Show, who just defeated Mark Henry to win the title in a Chairs Match, at WWE TLC on December 18, 2011.

The 2nd MITB match in 2011 for the WWE Championship Briefcase saw Evan Bourne compete in his 3rd MITB Match in a row, The Miz & Jack Swagger compete in their 2nd straight MITB Match, & Kofi Kingston compete in his 4th MITB Match in row. This match would mark the only MITB Matches for Alberto Del Rio, Rey Mysterio, Alex Riley, & R-Truth, making this match the match with the most participants competing in their only MITB Match. Del Rio became the 1st wrestler to win in his only MITB Match & became the 3rd MITB Match winner in a row to win in his debut MITB Match. Del Rio would hold the briefcase for 28 days, before cashing on WWE Champion CM Punk, after he defeated John Cena, at SummerSlam on August 14, 2011.

In 2012, once again we saw 2 MITB Matches at the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View. The 1st one for the World Championship Briefcase was the 1st time since 2008 that both the Intercontinental & United States Champions were in the same match & the 1st since 2008 that Kofi Kingston did not compete in a MITB Match. This was Dolph Ziggler’s 3rd MITB Match & 1st since 2010, Sin Cara’s 2nd MITB Match in a row, Cody Rhodes’ 3rd MITB Match in a row, & Christian’s 5th MITB Match & 1st since 2010. This was the MITB debuts of Damien Sandow, & in their only MITB Match, Tyson Kidd, Santino Marella, & Tensai. This would be the last time that 8 wrestlers would compete in a MITB Match. Dolph Ziggler became the 1st person to win a MITB Match after 3 appearances. Ziggler would hold the briefcase for 267 days, when he cashed in on World Champion Alberto Del Rio, who just defeated Jack Swagger & Zeb Colter in a Handicap Match, on Raw on April 8, 2013, the night after WrestleMania 29, becoming the person to hold the briefcase the longest, until 2015.

The 2nd MITB Match at Money In The Bank 2012 was the main event, becoming the 1st time that a MITB Match opened & main evented a Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View. This match was the only time that there was only 5 participants, making it the smallest MITB Match in History. This match was Miz’s 3rd straight MITB Match in a row, Kane’s 6th MITB Match & 5th in a row, Chris Jericho’s 4th MITB Match & 1st since 2010, & The Big Show’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2010. This match marked John Cena’s only MITB Match, making him the 2nd wrestler to win a MITB Match in his only MITB appearance & the 4th year in row someone won in their debut MITB Match. This event marked the 1st time that only 1 wrestler made their debut in a MITB Match. Cena would be the 1st person & to date, the last person, since Rob Van Dam to announce when he was going to cash-in his Contract, as he announced on Raw the night after Money In The Bank that he would cash-in a week later on Raw’s 1000th Episode against WWE Champion CM Punk, 8 days later on July 23, 2012. In that match, due to The Big Show’s interference, John Cena won the match, but not the title, becoming the 1st MITB Winner to not become WWE or World Champion after cashing-in the MITB briefcase.

In 2013, the MITB Match opened up the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View, once again. This event marked the 1st time that 2 Tag Teams competed in the same MITB Match, as we saw The Real Americans of Cesaro & Jack Swagger & Team Rhodes Scholars of Cody Rhodes & Damien Sandow. This marked Rhodes’ 4th MITB Match in a row, Sandow’s 2nd MITB Match in a row, Swagger’s 3rd MITB Match, & 1st since 2011, & Wade Barrett’s 2nd MITB & 1st since 2011. This was the MITB debuts for Dean Ambrose & Cesaro & to date only MITB Matches for Fandango. Damien Sandow became the 2nd person to win a MITB Match in his 2nd MITB Match after CM Punk in 2008. Sandow would attempt to cash-in the briefcase 106 days later, on World Champion John Cena on Raw on October 28, 2013, but became the 1st person to lose a cash-in match by pinfall.

The 2nd MITB Match at Money In The Bank 2013 took place in the main event, making it the 2nd & final year, that a MITB Match opened and main evented a Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View. This match was billed as an All-Star Match and featured no one making their MITB debuts or competing in back-to-back MITB Matches. This event marked the return of 6 participants for the 1st time since 2006. But it was scheduled to be a 7-Way Match, as Kane was injured prior to the match by The Wyatt Family, making it the 1st time that Kane did not compete in the MITB Match since 2008. This was Daniel Bryan’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2011, Rob Van Dam’s 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2006, giving him the longest gap between appearances in MITB Matches, Sheamus’ 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2011, Randy Orton’s 3rd MITB Match & 1st since 2010, CM Punk’s 4th MITB Match & 1st since 2009, & Christian’s 6th MITB Match & 1st since 2012. Randy Orton became the 2nd person to win the MITB Match in his 3rd appearance. Orton would hold the case for 35 days, cashing-in on WWE Champion Daniel Bryan, who defeated John Cena to win the title at SummerSlam on August 18, 2013.

In 2014, for the 1st time since 2009, there was only 1 MITB Match for a World Championship Match Contract at Money In The Bank 2014, therefore it was the 1st time that only 1 Championship can be cashed-in on, since there was only 1 World Heavyweight Championship in WWE. There was a 2nd Ladder Match at this event, but it was for the Vacant World Heavyweight Championship and not a Contract, therefore it will not be counted in the Money In The Bank Ladder Match History. This was the 1st time that the MITB Match was not the opener or main event of the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View, since the Pay-Per-View started in 2010. This was the 1st time that a Gold Briefcase was used instead of a black, red, or blue briefcase & was the 1st time that the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View aired on June, instead of July. This match was Dean Ambrose’s 2nd MITB Match in a row, Rob Van Dam’s 2nd MITB Match in a row & 3rd overall, Dolph Ziggler’s 4th MITB Match & 1st since 2012, Jack Swagger’s 4th MITB Match & 2nd in a row, & Kofi Kingston’s 5th MITB Match & 1st since 2011. This was the MITB debut of Seth Rollins, making this the 1st match since 2012 that only 1 wrestler made his MITB debut & the 1st one since 2012 & John Cena to win in his only MITB Match. Rollins made history when he cashed in his briefcase 273 days later at WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015. It was the 1st time that a cash-in happened in the middle of a match, instead of after, as Seth Rollins turned the World Heavyweight Championship Match between Champion Brock Lesnar & Roman Reigns into a Triple Threat Match, by pinning Reigns, which was the 1st time that a Champion was not pinned by a MITB Contract holder. He also became the 1st person to cash-in a MITB Contract at WrestleMania, the Pay-Per-View where the MITB Match debuted.

In 2015, for the 2nd year in a row, there was only 1 MITB Match. Sheamus competed in his 3rd MITB Match, & 1st since 2013, Randy Orton competed in his 4th MITB Match, & 1st since 2013, Dolph Ziggler competed in his 5th MITB Match, & 2nd in a row, Kofi Kingston competed in his 6th MITB Match, & 2nd in a row, & Kane competed in his 7th MITB Match & 1st since 2012. This was the MITB debut of Neville & Roman Reigns becoming the 49th & 50th Participants in MITB History & making it the 1st time since 2009 that only 2 people made their MITB debut. It was the 1st 7-Way Match since 2013. Sheamus became the 3rd person to win the MITB Contract in his 3rd match. Sheamus would hold the briefcase for 161 Days, cashing in on WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns who just defeated Dean Ambrose to win the vacant title, at WWE Survivor Series on November 22, 2015.

In 2016, for the 3rd year in a row, there was only 1 MITB Match. Chris Jericho competed in his 5th MITB Match, & 1st since 2012, Dean Ambrose competed in his 3rd MITB Match, & 1st since 2014, Cesaro competed in his 2nd MITB Match, & 1st since 2013, Alberto Del Rio competed in his 2nd MITB Match & 1st since 2011. This was the MITB debuts of Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn, making it the 2nd year in a row only 2 people made their MITB debuts. This was the 1st time in MITB History that no one competed in back-to-back MITB Matches. It was the 5th 6-Way MITB Match & 1st since 2014. Dean Ambrose became the 4th person & 2nd in a row to win the MITB Contract in his 3rd match. Ambrose would only hold the briefcase for 57 minutes, cashing in on new World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins, who just defeated Roman Reigns to win the title, later that night at Money In The Bank on June 19, 2016. This was the 1st time since 2010 that someone cashed in the contract on the same night.

In 2017, for the 1st time since 2013, there was 2 MITB Matches at a Money In The Bank PPV. And for the 1st time in WWE History, one of them featured women & was the 1st ever MITB Match for a Contract for a Women’s Championship. It was the MITB debuts for Carmella, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, & Tamina Snuka. It was the most wrestlers to make their MITB debut since 6 wrestlers competed in their 1st MITB Match in 2006. Charlotte Flair also became the 1st child of a former MITB competitor. Natalya became the 1st spouse of a MITB Match to compete in a MITB Match. It was the 2nd 5-Way Match in MITB History & 1st since 2012. Even though James Ellsworth grabbed the briefcase, Carmella was the official winner, therefore she was the 1st wrestler since Seth Rollins in 2014 to win a MITB Match in their debut match. It opened up the PPV, making it the 6th MITB Match to be a opener & the 1st since 2015. The 2nd MITB Match main evented the PPV for the 1st time since 2013. 2013 was the last time that a MITB Match opened & main evented a MITB PPV. Dolph Ziggler competed in his 6th MITB Match & 1st since 2015. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn competed in their 2nd MITB Match in a row, which was the 1st time since 2015 that someone competed in back-to-back MITB Matches. Baron Corbin, Shinsuke Nakamura, & AJ Styles competed in their 1st MITB Matches, which was the 1st time since 2013 that 3 wrestlers competed in their 1st MITB Match. Kevin Owens was the 1st defending United States Champion to be in the MITB Match since The Miz in 2010. It was the 6th 6-Way MITB Match & 2nd year in a row. It was the 5th MITB Match for a WWE Championship Contract & 1st since 2013. Baron Corbin was the 11th wrestler to win the MITB Match in his debut match & therefore, it was the 1st time since 2011 that 2 wrestlers won their debut MITB matches on the same night. On the June 20, 2017 episode of Smackdown, it was ruled that because James Ellsworth climbed the ladder and dropped it to Carmella, her win was voided and another Money In The Bank Match was ordered for Smackdown on June 27, 2017 with the same 5 women, Carmella, Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch, Natalya, & Tamina Snuka. Therefore, it was the 1st ever Money In The Bank Ladder Match on Smackdown. It was the 1st time since 2013 that there were 3 Money In The Bank Ladder Matches in the same year & the 1st time since 2010 that multiple people competed in 2 Money In The Bank Matches in the same year. As of press time, Carmella has not cashed in her MITB Contract. But, on Smackdown, on August 15, 2017, Corbin cashed in his MITB Contract after 58 days after interfering in a Non-Title Match between John Cena & WWE Champion Jinder Mahal, costing Mahal the match by Disqualification. But due to a distraction by Cena, Mahal rolled up Corbin up, therefore making Corbin the 3rd person to unsuccessfully cash in a MITB Contract.

Now that you know the history of the MITB Matches, here are some facts that aren’t listed above. There have been 60 participants in 20 MITB Matches, with 19 Winners, since CM Punk & Carmella are the only people to win 2 MITB Matches. 25 wrestlers have only competed in 1 MITB Match. Out of those 30 wrestlers, Baron Corbin, John Cena, Alberto Del Rio, & Seth Rollins have won their only MITB Match. Besides them, Daniel Bryan, Edge, Mr. Kennedy, The Miz, Rob Van Dam, & Jack Swagger won their debut MITB Matches, while the other winners won after multiple MITB Matches. 19 wrestlers have competed in 2 MITB Matches. 8 wrestlers have competed in 3 MITB Matches. 5 wrestlers have competed in 4 MITB Matches. Shelton Benjamin & Chris Jericho are the only wrestler to compete in 5 MITB Matches. Christian, Kofi Kingston, & Dolph Ziggler are the only wrestlers to compete in 6 MITB Matches. Kane is the only wrestler to compete in 7 MITB Matches. The best record for all MITB Participants goes to CM Punk, with a record of 2-2-0 & the tie for the worst record without a win goes to Christian & Kofi Kingston with a record of 0-6-0. Kane & Cody Rhodes are the only wrestlers to compete 4 years in a row in a MITB Match. There has been 3 5-Way Matches, 6 6-Way Matches, 3 7-Way Matches, 7 8-Way Matches, & 1 10-Way Match. 6 MITB Matches had not specific title opportunity at stake, meaning the winner can challenge for either the WWE or World Title. 5 MITB Matches were for a WWE Championship Contract. 7 MITB Matches were for a World Heavyweight Championship Contract. 2 MITB Matches were for a Smackdown Women’s Championship Contract. Cash-Ins have happened on Raw 6 times, on Smackdown 3 times, at SummerSlam & Money In The Bank twice, & one time each at New Year’s Revolution, One Night Stand, Extreme Rules, WrestleMania, Survivor Series, & TLC. John Cena has had the most cash-ins against him, with Cena losing the title twice, but defeating Damien Sandow. CM Punk has had 2 cash-ins against him, with 2 losses, but only losing the title once, as he lost to John Cena by Disqualification. Jinder Mahal is the 2nd defending Champion to beat the MITB Contract holder, after John Cena. All of the other champions have only lost once. Edge, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton, & John Cena are the only MITB Winners to also lose a Title Match. 2010 was the year with the most cash-ins, with 3, while 2006, 2011, 2013 & 2015 have had 2, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2016, & 2017 have had 1, & 2014 had no cash-ins. The longest time someone held the briefcase for was Edge, who held it for 280 Days, while the shortest was Kane, who cashed-in the same night he won it, holding it for only 48 minutes. Also, every cash-in besides Van Dam, John Cena, & Damien Sandow involved interference of some kind, either the Champion wrestled a grueling match prior to the cash-in or the Champion was laid out by someone before the MITB winner came out.

2017 WWE MONEY IN THE BANK PPV PARTICIPANTS’ HISTORY

As I do every month, it’s time to look at this weekend’s Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View and see the history of all of the participants. To see the entire 7 year history of Money In The Bank, visit the Money In The Bank History HERE. This will only look at the history of the Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View. To see the history of the actual Money In The Bank Match, go HERE. And for any feedback or comments about this, comment below or tweet me (@hbkid718). Thanks.

Since they are not scheduled to compete, this will be the 1st MITB PPV that John Cena or Sheamus will not be in action, therefore no one has competed at every MITB PPV. This will be the 1st MITB PPV since 2014 to have 2 Women’s Matches on it.

Since the Main Event has not been announced, here are the facts about it. If the WWE Championship is the main event, then it will be the 6th time that it will be defended in the main event & 4th year in a row, Randy Orton’s 3rd MITB PPV main event & 1st since 2014. If a Money In the Bank Ladder Match is the main event, then it will be the 3rd time that it will be the main event & 1st since 2013, but 1st Ladder Match to main event a MITB PPV since 2015. It will be everyone’s MITB PPV main event debut. If any other match is the main event, then it will be the 1st time for them.

Since the Opening Match has not been announced, here are the facts about it. If either Money In The Bank Ladder Match opens, it will be the 6th Money In The Bank Ladder Match to open up a MITB PPV, but 1st since 2015. 2017 WWE PAYBACK PARTICIPANTS’ HISTORY

As I do every month, it’s time to look at this weekend’s Payback Pay-Per-View and see the history of all of the participants. To see the entire 4 year history of Payback, visit the Payback History HERE. And for any feedback or comments about this, comment below or tweet me (@hbkid718). Thanks.

Since no Main Event has been announced, here are the facts. Since there are no WWE or World Title Matches, it will be the 1st time since 2014 that the Main Event will not feature a WWE or World Title Match. If Reigns VS Strowman is the Main Event, it will be Reigns’ 4th straight Payback Main Event. The only other wrestlers to compete in a Payback Main Event are Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, & Randy Orton, who all last competed in the Main Event in 2015. Everyone else will be making their Payback Main Event debuts.

Since no opening matches have been announced, here are the facts. The only wrestlers on the card to compete in an opening match are Sheamus in 2015 & Cesaro in 2014. Everyone else will be making their Payback opening match debuts.

At the end of this column, I added a match that I think might be added to WWE Payback, due to the announced MizTV segment for the Kickoff Show. I added it just in case it gets added to the show at the last minute. That way if it does happen, the facts will be ready to go. If it doesn’t occur, then I apologize.
