2021 WWE FASTLANE PPV PARTICIPANTS’ PPV HISTORY

Since I do the blogs looking at every Pay-Per-View every month, I thought I would do one looking at WWE Fastlane. To see the entire history of Fastlane, visit the Fastlane HERE. And for any feedback or comments about this, comment below or tweet me (@hbkid718). Thanks.

This is the 1st Fastlane PPV since 2019. Even though there was no Fastlane in 2020, if they wrestled in 2019 & will be wrestling again in 2021, I will count it as back-to-back Fastlane events. This will be the 1st Fastlane since 2017 that the WWE Championship will not be defended, the 1st PPV of 2021, the 1st PPV since Survivor Series on November 22, 2021 that the WWE Championship was defended, but the 1st time since Payback on August 30, 2020 that the WWE Champion didn’t wrestle on PPV. This will be the 2nd PPV in a row in 2021 to not have a Women’s Championship Match & the 1st Fastlane in History to not have a Women’s Championship Match, ending a streak of the Women’s Championship being the only Championship to be defended at every Fastlane event. This will be the 3rd PPV in a row to not have a Tag Team Championship Match on it & the 1st Fastlane since 2016 to not have one.

Since no Kickoff Match has been announced, here are the facts about it. The wrestlers on the roster to wrestle on a Kickoff Match are Big E, Xavier Woods, Shinsuke Nakamura (2019), Shelton Benjamin, Chad Gable, & Mojo Rawley (2018), Akira Tozawa (2017), & Kalisto (2016). The only title to be defended on a Fastlane Kickoff Match was the United States Championship in 2016.

Since the Opening Match has not been announced, here are the facts about it. The wrestlers on the roster to wrestle in a Opening Match are: Jey Uso, Shane McMahon, & The Miz (2019), Shinsuke Nakamura (2018), Sami Zayn (2017), Sasha Banks, Naomi, & Tamina (2016), Seth Rollins & Dolph Ziggler (2015). The only Championship to be defended in an Opening Match was the Smackdown Tag Team Championship in 2019.

WWE UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: DANIEL BRYAN VS WWE UNIVERSAL CHAMPION ROMAN REIGNS WITH SPECIAL ENFORCER: EDGE

Daniel Bryan VS Roman Reigns will be the 3rd Universal Championship Match of 2021, the 1st since Elimination Chamber on February 21, & the 3rd PPV in a row in 2021. It will be the 4th WWE or Universal Championship Match at Fastlane, the 2nd Fastlane in a row, but the 1st Universal Championship Match since Goldberg VS Kevin Owens in 2017, making this the 1st time in Fastlane History that Kevin Owens is not wrestling in a WWE or Universal Championship Match, as he wrestled in a 6-Pack Match in 2018 & a Triple Threat Match in 2019 for the WWE Championship. This will be Daniel Bryan’s 3rd Fastlane & 2nd in a row, his 2nd WWE or Universal Championship Match at Fastlane in a row, his 3rd PPV in a row in 2021, & his 2nd Universal Championship Match in a row in 2021. This will be Roman Reigns’ 5th Fastlane match, giving him the most Fastlane Matches in History, & his 2nd in a row, but will be his 1st ever WWE or Universal Championship Match at Fastlane. It will be his 3rd PPV in a row in 2021. Daniel Bryan at Fastlane will be Roman Reigns’ 8th Universal Championship Defense, giving him the most Universal Championship Defenses in History, surpassing Kevin Owens, Brock Lesnar, & Seth Rollins who all had 7 Defenses. As of Fastlane, Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship Reign has lasted 204 Days, which is the 2nd Longest of All-Time after Brock Lesnar’s 1st Reign (4/2/17 – 8/19/18), which lasted 503 Days. This will be the 1st match ever to take place multiple times at Fastlane after they wrestled each other in 2015, & is the 5th 1-on-1 Match between them after Smackdown on May 31, 2013 (won by Reigns by Disqualification), Raw on September 16, 2013 (won by Bryan), Fastlane on February 22, 2015 (won by Reigns), & Elimination Chamber on February 21 (won by Reigns), so Bryan has won 1 & Reigns has won 3, making this the 2nd or 3rd match to be re-matched from Elimination Chamber. Edge will be the 1st time ever that there was a Special Enforcer at Fastlane, the 1st Special Enforcer since Elias was Special Enforcer for Roman Reigns VS The B-Team on Smackdown on April 30, 2019, & the 1st on PPV since John Laurinaitis at the Royal Rumble for CM Punk VS Dolph Ziggler on January 29, 2012, which was the last time there was a Special Enforcer for a WWE or World Championship Match. This will be the 3rd WWE or Universal Championship Match to main event a Fastlane & 1st since 2018, but 2nd Universal Championship Match & 1st since 2017. This will be Daniel Bryan’s 2nd Fastlane main event & the 1st since 2015, making Bryan VS Reigns the only match to main event Fastlane twice. It will be Roman Reigns’ 4th Fastlane main event, which is the most in Fastlane History & his 2nd in a row, making it the 3rd time in a row that someone wrestled in back-to-back Fastlane events (Kevin Owens in 2017 & 2018 & King Corbin in 2018 & 2019). The Universal Championship has never changed hands in 2021, but has changed once at Fastlane, in 2017, when Goldberg defeated Kevin Owens. It has changed hands 15 times in History. If Daniel Bryan wins, he would be the 5th to be both WWE & Universal Champion, after Roman Reigns, Bray Wyatt, Brock Lesnar, & Seth Rollins, but the 1st in History to be World Heavyweight, WWE, & Universal Champion, as well as United States & Intercontinental Champion.

Daniel Bryan (1-1-0)

  2. Defeated Mustafa Ali & Kevin Owens in a Triple Threat Match to retain the WWE Championship (3/10/19)

Roman Reigns (4-0-0)

WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: WWE INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION BIG E VS APOLLO CREWS

Big E VS Apollo Crews will be the 6th Intercontinental Championship Match of 2021, the 1st since Smackdown on March 12, & the 1st on PPV since the Triple Threat Ladder Match between Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles, & Sami Zayn at Clash of Champions on September 27, 2020. It will be the 3rd at Fastlane & 1st since Kevin Owens defeated Dolph Ziggler to retain the title in 2016. This will be Big E’s 2nd Fastlane event in a row, but 1st ever Singles Match or Title Match at Fastlane. This will be Big E’s 1st PPV since the Royal Rumble on January 31, his 1st Singles Match on PPV since he defeated Sheamus at Payback on August 30, 2020, & the 1st time he is defending the Intercontinental Championship on PPV since he defeated Jack Swagger at Elimination Chamber on February 23, 2014. Apollo Crews will be Big E’s 7th Intercontinental Championship Defense, so if he would lose, he would be the 1st since William Regal who lost to Rob Van Dam at WrestleMania 18 on March 17, 2002 to lose in his 7th Defense. As of Fastlane, Big E’s Intercontinental Championship Reign has lasted 86 Days, so if he loses, he would be the 1st ever to lose in 86 Days. This will be Apollo Crews’ Fastlane debut, his 1st PPV since the Battle Royal at Survivor Series on November 22, 2020, & his 1st Singles Match on PPV since he lost to Bobby Lashley for the United States Championship at Clash of Champions on September 27, 2020. This will be the 3rd 1-on-1 Match between Big E & Crews after Smackdown on January 8, 2021 (won by E) & January 22, 2021 (won by Crews by Disqualification), so E has won 1 & Crews has won 1. This would be the 1st Intercontinental Title Change of 2021, the 1st on PPV since Sami Zayn won the Ladder Match at Clash of Champions on September 27, 2021, the 1st ever to take place at Fastlane, & the 180th of All-Time. If Crews wins, he will be the 1st to be both the United States & Intercontinental Championship since Jeff Hardy in 2020 & the 26th in History. He will be the 1st first time Champion since AJ Styles in 2020.

It will be Riddle’s Fastlane debut & his 3rd PPV in a row in 2021. It will be his 1st 1-on-1 Match on PPV since he defeated King Corbin at Payback on August 30, 2020. Mustafa Ali will be Riddle’s 2nd United States Championship Defense, so if he would lose, he would be the 1st to be Ricochet who lost to AJ Styles at Extreme Rules on July 14, 2019 to lose in his 2nd Defense. As of Fastlane, Riddle’s United States Championship Reign has lasted 28 Days, so if he would lose he would be the 4th United States Champion to lose in 28 Days after Zack Ryder (12/18/11 – 1/16/12), Seth Rollins (8/23/15 – 9/20/15), & Kevin Owens’ 1st Reign (4/2/17 – 4/30/17). It will be Mustafa Ali’s 2nd Fastlane in a row & 1st 1-on-1 Match at Fastlane. It will be his 3rd PPV in a row in 2021 & will be only his 4th 1-on-1 Match on PPV after he lost to Cedric Alexander at WrestleMania 34 on April 8, 2018, lost to Murphy at Survivor Series on November 18, 2018 & lost to Randy Orton at Hell In A Cell on October 6, 2019. This will be the 3rd 1-on-1 Match between them after Raw on March 1 (won by Ali) & Raw on March 15 (won by Riddle), so they each have won 1 match. This is the 2nd PPV in a row that a match took place on Raw & then re-matched on PPV the following week after the Gauntlet Match on Raw on February 15 & Elimination Chamber on February 21. The United States Championship has changed once in 2021 at Elimination Chamber on February 21, & has changed hands once at Fastlane, in 2018, when Randy Orton defeated Bobby Roode, & will be the 75th of All-Time. If Ali wins, he would be the 2nd 1st time Champion in a row & the 2nd wrestler in a row to win the United States Championship as his 1st title on the main roster, not counting NXT. He would be the 1st United States Champion since Apollo Crews to win the United States Title as his 1st ever title, counting NXT.

Banks & Belair will be Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax’s 4th Women’s Tag Team Championship Match Defense, so if they would have lost, it would be the 2nd time they lost the titles in their 4th Defense, as they lost to Asuka & Charlotte Flair at TLC on December 20, 2020, & would join the list of every Women’s Tag Team Champion except for Banks & Bayley’s 2 Reigns (1st Reign ended in 2 Defenses & 2nd Reign in 5 Defenses) & The Kabuki Warriors (5 Defenses) to lose in 4 Defenses. As of Fastlane, Baszler & Jax’s Women’s Tag Team Championship Reign has lasted 50 Days, so if they would lose, they would be the 1st ever to lose the title in 50 Days, & they would have the 3rd Shortest Reign of All-Time after Banks & Bayley’s 1st Reign (49 Days, 2/17/19 – 4/7/19) & Asuka & Flair (41 Days, 12/20/20 – 1/31/21).
